Gascony is in danger
In France, the Paris region, the East, the South-East and the South-West are concerned : in all 27 % of France is affected by shale gas exploration and exploitation licences.
In the Gers area, the oil companies have submitted six permits : the "département" is almost totally covered. Three permits are already validated (Saint-Griède, Tarbes-Val d'Adour, Côtes de Gascogne) and the other three (Beaumont de Lomagne, Mirande and Eauze) are being instructed by the "Préfet de région" in Toulouse.
What is shale gas ?
It's an unconventional form of natural gas which is trapped in deep shale formations. The only way to extract it is through hydraulic fracturing (or fracking). For each fracturation, 10 to 20 millions litres water, sand and toxic chemicals are injected under high pressure into wells.
